Darien
General Information - Darien

Darién is the largest province of Panama and the less populated. Its main city is La Palma, created in 1922. The province is divided into 2 districts: Chepigana and Pinogana, composed for 25 small towns. Besides it there is the Emberá-Wounaan region divided into two areas (they possess autonomy to administer and to negotiate their territory).

The conquest and the colonization of the Panamanian territory went through this province. The first Spaniard arriving at Panama was Rodrigo de Bastidas, who explored the coast of Darién in 1501. The first municipality of the entire American continent was in the historic City of Santa María La Antigua de Darién.

The black population of Darién is originating from the descendants of the untamed, slaves that escaped from the Spanish colonizers. Likewise, they inhabit the region, the Kunas, represented by the Cuevas Indians; as well as the Emberás and Wounaan Indian (both known as chocoes). These communities live remotely, near the courses of the rivers, and they do not possess political links, neither economic structure. They are dedicated to the hunt, the harvesting, the fishing and to the craft (baskets, carve of wood, works in vegetable ivory).

As for its economic contribution to the country, is the one of smaller activity. Among their main products they have the wood, the plantain, the bananas and the rubber.

As for the climate, Darién is a rainy and very humid region. This factor, together with the limited population, is determinant in the conservation of its fauna and flora, since it is one of the most diverse ecologically regions of our entire planet.
